Marrero is a city in LA and is part of Jefferson Parish. The population is around 30,000 people.
Marrero, LA is famous for having many cemeteries. Some of them are in honor of people who were lost during Hurricane Katrina. Marrero is an unincorporated area not associated with Jefferson Parish.
There are two rivers that run through the community: The Harvey Canal and the Mississippi River.
Marrero was originally established in 1887 by Louisa St. Julien de Bourbonnais (1817-1908), an Italian immigrant who built a home at Bayou Barataria in the area now known as Leon C. Simon Drive in Marrero. She named the plantation “Retour des Boeufs” in honor of her husband’s ancestors, who had earlier fled France to escape persecution for their beliefs.
This land became part of what is now known as Algiers Point, with the home serving as a river crossing for Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, the city’s founder. The name Retour des Boeufs evolved into “Retreat of the Cows” and finally became “Routreaux”.
The area remained rural until 1925 when subdivisions were laid out by developers Paul Capdevielle (1877-1951), Jules Derbes (1880-1956), and John Perot. They proposed the name “Marrero”, for Antoine Marrero, a Spanish landowner who lived in the area before the American Civil War.
Marrero has many notable attractions including the High School, the High Ridge Yacht Club, and Rivertown. The Marrero Country Club is in nearby Westwego.
The area’s notable attractions include the Metairie/Gretna ferry (locally known as “The Gretna Ferry”), which crosses to New Orleans from a location near the intersection of Lapalco Boulevard and Belle Chasse Highway. It has been in continuous operation since 1883 and is one of the few remaining ferries that cross the Mississippi River from West Bank to East Bank, serving as a reminder of an earlier time when Jefferson Parish was largely separated from adjacent Orleans Parish by water.
